Scion Executive Search (SES) was retained by a confidential international life sciences nonprofit public–private partnership navigating rapid growth and increasing operational complexity. After previously placing the organization’s first Chief Financial Officer in 2021 at a revenue level of approximately $20–30M, the organization had more than doubled in scale to over $50M by 2024. With new regulatory demands, federal funding uncertainty, and heightened governance expectations, the leadership team recognized the need for a next-stage financial executive.
The organization required not just a builder of finance infrastructure, but a seasoned executive capable of introducing new levels of rigor, discipline, and strategic partnership to the CEO and board. Scion partnered closely with board finance committee members with deep biotech and life sciences expertise, as well as a visionary, non-finance-oriented executive team, to realign expectations and develop a unified leadership profile.
Scion developed a national search strategy focused on organizations with comparable federal funding complexity, international operations, and public–private partnership structures. The resulting slate blended nonprofit finance executives with hybrid nonprofit/for-profit leaders, emphasizing change management experience, federal funding fluency, and executive temperament suited to a fast-evolving environment.
The placed CFO brought deep corporate finance training paired with significant nonprofit leadership experience, delivering immediate executive credibility while advancing systems modernization, compliance, financial reporting discipline, and organization-wide financial literacy. The executive now serves as a strategic partner to the CEO and board, positioning the organization for its next phase of impact and growth.
This engagement demonstrates Scion’s ability to guide organizations through growth inflection points, align complex stakeholder groups, and place financial executives who are not only technically exceptional, but contextually right for the moment. We are honored to support nonprofit and mission-driven organizations nationwide in identifying transformative CFO leadership.
