Scion Executive Search (www.scionexecutivesearch.com) has been retained to conduct a national search for the Senior Director of Development on behalf of our Newport Beach, CA client. 

 

Position Summary:

The Senior Director of Development will lead development and implementation of a strategic fundraising plan on a national scope. This includes major outright gifts, institutional giving, foundation giving, planned giving, grants, and other diversified development strategies.

S/he will develop and implement strategies which align organizational strengths, initiatives and priorities with fundraising opportunities. In addition, this role will be key in positioning the organization on the leading edge in an effort to increase organizational fundraising and external collaborations.

 

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Recruit, develop and empower a qualified Board of Directors to utilize their networks for fundraising
  • Develop an integrated strategic plan for advancing the organizational donor development program; including: stewardship strategies focused on major gifts, institutional giving, foundation giving, planned giving, and individual giving.
  • Recruit local and national corporate sponsorships.
  • Cultivate and steward relationships with key potential donor prospects; leading pipeline development of prospective donors at major gift levels.
  • Organize donor programs and events; building long term, strategic relationships with key influencers which drive donations.
  • Ensure donors and prospects are informed of key organizational initiatives and individual donation impact using continuous communication.
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
  • Assist with special projects, as requested.
  • Intermittent travel (15-20%)

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in business, communications, or related field.
  • 7-10+ years of successful development experience and major gifts experience is required.
  • A passion for supporting a health related mission, the ability to speak eloquently about the organization's cause and promote awareness.
  • Experience in all aspects of donor development, including planned giving, major gifts, institutional giving, and foundation giving, with a proven, successful track record of donor cultivation.
  • Possess formal training in major gifts, and strategic fundraising planning highly preferred.
  • Understanding of and experience with nonprofit organizations, donor-centric fundraising and best practices.
  • Knowledge of donor database management and ability to leverage contacts for greater efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Passion for your role and ease with talking with new people; possesses eagerness to learn and inspiration to be a part of a mission bigger than oneself.
  • Proven ability to make accurate forecasts and hit major milestones.
  • Excitement for identifying new and efficient ways to create innovative approaches to increase efficiency with programs.
  • Propensity to be a self-starter; takes initiative to solve problems/pursue new business opportunities.
  • Constructively challenges standard processes and seeks out new opportunities for growth, improvement, and innovation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Extremely polished with public presentations; presents information in a manner which enables donors to feel compelled to engage.
  • Experience managing complex programs while balancing multiple priorities effectively.
  • Strong problem solving skills.
