Scion Executive Search (www.scionexecutivesearch.com) has been retained to conduct the search for the Executive Director of the National Crime Prevention Council (www.ncpc.org). This exciting position reports to the volunteer, national Board of Directors, and is based in the Washington DC Metro Area.  NCPC can be flexible about location while staff are, for the most part, working remotely due to COVID.  Position will require substantial in-person presence when the office reopens. The office is located in Gambrills, Maryland. 

We seek a passionate, determined, highly ethical, and experienced leader who can build teams, build boards, oversee fundraising initiatives and the fund development process, apply a critical eye to all agency products, drive strategic steps and growth, and lead in revamping the organization’s strategic plan.

ABOUT NCPC

The National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) is the nation’s leader in crime prevention. NCPC is a private, nonprofit organization whose primary mission is to help people keep themselves, their families, and their communities safe from crime.  Civic engagement has always been central to our mission.

NCPC manages a public education campaign—symbolized by McGruff the Crime Dog® and his “Take A Bite Out Of Crime®” slogan.  In recent years, our public education campaigns raise awareness among the public on a wide range of topics including Intellectual Property theft, firearms safety, fraud prevention, and cyberbullying. 

We have a national crime prevention network of nearly 15,000 crime prevention professionals and national, federal, state, and local organizations.  

NCPC is funded through a variety of government agencies, corporations, foundations, and donations from individuals.

NCPC publishes books, kits of camera-ready program materials, posters, and informational and policy reports on a variety of crime prevention and community-building subjects. NCPC offers training, technical assistance, and a national focus for crime prevention.

NCPC’s award-winning websites feature topical prevention tips, describe prevention practices for community building, help anchor prevention policy and activities at the local level, and provide games, stories, and advice from McGruff® for children.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director has overall responsibility and accountability for the strategic, programmatic, and financial performance of NCPC and its program objectives to internal and external constituencies, and provides personal leadership to the Board and staff in formulating policy, developing strategy, raising funds and implementing programs.  Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the Board and staff in shaping a compelling vision for the agency.
  • Providing leadership and creative input into the development and implementation of NCPC’s programs and public education efforts.
  • Serving as the lead representative and chief spokesperson for the organization in promoting its mission and programs, thereby increasing public awareness and visibility on crime prevention issues.
  • Leading the efforts of NCPC in building and maintaining close working relationships with leaders of public institutions, private organizations, and the media on the local, state and national level who can help efforts to reduce and prevent crime.
  • Leading NCPC’s fundraising efforts.  Those efforts include personal solicitation of grants and contributions from foundations, individuals and corporations as well as maintaining funding from federal agencies.
  • Leading NCPC’s outreach efforts.
  • Leading the strategic planning and governance of the agency, working closely with the Board to establish priorities and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of existing and new programs and procedures.
  • Providing leadership and motivation to the senior staff on financial and operational matters and making timely management and administrative decisions.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Significant experience with criminal justice, communications, and/or intellectual property (these are equally important – we are developing multi-media public education campaigns)
  • 3-5 years of experience working with or for nonprofit organizations
  • 5+ years of experience at executive level
  • 5+ years of people management experience
  • Strong transition management experience
  • Experience in oversight of public education campaigns
  • A strategic view on community-police relations and engagement 5+ years of budget and grants management experience
  • Significant experience reviewing contracts and developing/reviewing proposals
  • Proven track record of fundraising/business development success

EDUCATION & OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Baccalaureate required; more advanced degree in appropriate field a plus

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

 

For this role, NCPC offers a competitive annual base salary of $130k plus a robust benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, a 401(k) retirement plan with employer match, and a generous paid time off program. This is a nationwide search.
