Scion Executive Search (www.scionexecutivesearch.com) has been retained to conduct a search for The Writers Guild of America West’s incoming General Counsel. The Writers Guild of America West (WGAW) is a dynamic, democratic, progressive labor union representing writers of motion pictures, television, radio, and internet programming, including news and documentaries. Founded in 1933, the Guild negotiates and administers contracts that protect the creative and economic rights of its members. It is involved in a wide range of programs that advance the interests of writers and is active in public policy and legislative matters on the local, national, and international levels. This incredible position is full-time and based in Los Angeles, CA. This role will work on a hybrid schedule of 3 days in-office and 2 days remote.
 
Position Overview:
 
Under the direction of the Executive Director, the General Counsel is the Chief Legal Officer representing the Guild. The General Counsel provides overall strategic direction in all legal matters involving the Guild. This position provides advice on, among other areas, labor and employment-related matters, regulatory matters, contract enforcement, risk assessment and compliance.
 
Key Responsibilities:
 
  • Provide legal expertise in support of Guild initiatives, campaigns, negotiations, and contract enforcement.
  • Identify and manage legal risk consistent with Guild priorities, initiatives, and strategic goals.
  • Conduct research and provide strategic and legal advice and training related to traditional labor law and contract enforcement issues.
  • Play a key role in developing and implementing bargaining strategies for industry-wide collective bargaining agreements on behalf of an active and engaged union.
  • Advise Guild concerning internal union governance, including compliance with the Labor Management Reporting and Disclosure Act.
  • Oversee and manage all outside counsel and litigation matters.
  • Provide strategic guidance on arbitration cases involving complex issues under industry-wide collective bargaining agreements and individual writers’ contracts.
  • Recommend policy and operational changes necessitated by legislative mandates at the federal, state, and local levels.
  • Represent the Guild in litigation, administrative proceedings, arbitrations, negotiations, and other legal and regulatory matters.
  • Work with other Guilds’ GCs on matters of common interest, including residual auditing program.
  • Provide support to Guild leadership team as well as assist with staff personnel matters and other duties as needed.
  • Provide advice on matters related to Guild’s institutional functions as a non-profit corporation, employer, and real estate property owner; review and negotiate contracts as needed.
 
Qualifications:
 
  • Graduation from law school with a J.D. degree.
  • Admission to practice in one or more jurisdictions.
  • A genuine passion and deep appreciation for the mission of The Writers Guild of America West.
  • A political and economic commitment to the labor movement.
  • Significant experience representing unions in labor and employment law matters.
  • National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) expertise required.
  • 5+ years of litigation experience including substantial trial or evidentiary hearing proficiency.
  • Exceptional writing skills including proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation abilities are required.
  • Extraordinary analytical abilities are a must.
  • Demonstrated skills in managing, leading, and motivating a high-performance team.
  • Adept at keeping updated on legal industry trends and changes to laws and regulations related to labor and employment law matters.
 
Compensation and Benefits:
 
In addition to a competitive base salary dependent upon experience, WGAW also provides employees with unrivaled benefits, including an exceptional full benefits and retirement package. Benefit plan includes paid medical, dental, and vision premiums for the individual, with dependent coverage for only $50.00 per month. There are 12 paid vacation days (amount increases with tenure), 12 sick days, and 11 paid holidays per year. There is also a pension plan with vesting after 5 qualified years, a 401(k) with partial match, life insurance, flexible spending accounts, and 12 weeks of paid parental leave.
