Scion Nonprofit Staffing, has been engaged to conduct an immediate search for a Sr. Philanthropy Officer on behalf of our amazing client, an impactful organization that provides meals, groceries, and nutrition counseling in Washington DC. This is an incredible direct-hire opportunity for a senior philanthropy professional that will expand a robust major gifts program with an established nonprofit!

Responsibilities:
  • Supervise Donor Relations Manager and provide strategic guidance for the mid-level giving and sustainer programs, including when to transition qualified prospects into the major donor portfolio. 
  • Identify, research, qualify, solicit, and steward donors and prospects to successfully close major gifts for the annual fund and leadership gifts for the capital campaign.
  • Build and manage a portfolio of 100-125 donors and qualified prospects.
  • Help lead routine pipeline meetings and donor strategy sessions. Ensure that each major donor and prospect has a clear strategy and timeline for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. 
  • Collaborate with colleagues to identify, qualify/disqualify donors to ensure placement in the giving channel that best facilitates optimal engagement to strengthen long-term financial support.
  • Create and implement thoughtful individual solicitation strategies that will incorporate blended gifts (annual/capital; annual/capital/planned, etc.) and/or deferred and varied giving options (stock, retirement plans, charitable remainder trusts, etc.) to help donors make their most meaningful gift.
  • Work closely with supervisor on the planned giving program. Keep current on planned and major giving techniques and changes affecting charitable giving, including attending seminars and courses.
  • Create opportunities for two-dialogue and increased donor engagement.
  • Cultivate, solicit, and steward through an active schedule including personal meetings, phone calls, personalized emails, written communications, cold calling, tours and events.
  • Network with existing and prospective donors to meet new potential donors and convert those relationships into donors.
  • Develop briefing memos, proposals, stewardship materials, thank you notes, letters, written updates, acknowledgements, etc.
  • Implement donor appreciation events to recognize, thank and educate current donors.
  • Utilize Raiser’s Edge for reporting and to track progress, donor notes and actions. Update proposals, donor profiles and strategies in a timely manner.
  • Prepare and manage major donor budget; provide oversight and guidance in preparing the mid-level and sustainer budgets.
  • Support the organization at some of its many events unrelated to major donors.
 
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required.
  • 8+ years of experience, with at least four years raising gifts of $10,000+.
  • Proven experience with donor research, successful donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Strong knowledge of planned giving.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills a must. 
  • Knowledge of advanced development techniques, including an understanding of current laws regarding taxability of donations, familiarity with deferred giving strategies, and knowledge of a diverse array of charitable instruments.
  • Comfortable interfacing with a wide variety of constituents—development staff, donors, businesses, board members and others—and diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Strong active listening skills: ability to build relationships quickly and ask thoughtful and strategic questions, inspiring donors to communicate philanthropic goals.
  • Desire and ability to communicate effectively and comfortably with donors in person and over the phone. Comfort in “cold calling” and in direct solicitation of major, planned and leadership gifts.
  • Goal oriented and mission focused, metric driven.
  • Solid computer skills in a PC environment. Excellent skills in the use of Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Word; Working knowledge of Raiser’s Edge and/or experience with data management or CRMs a plus.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity in handling confidential information.
  • Highly organized with acute attention to detail and time management.
  • Skill in communicating, both orally and in writing, with diplomacy and tact.
  • Ability to prepare sophisticated, grammatically correct written documents.
  • Ability to organize sophisticated donor cultivation and recognition events.
  • Ability to attend evening events.
  • Ability and license to operate a motor vehicle.

Compensation & Benefits:
The ability to work for an organization with a phenomenal mission, positive team-oriented work environment and a competitive salary of around $115,000 depending on experience.
