Scion Executive Search has been retained to identify the incoming Senior Vice President of Development on behalf of our client, Sandy Hook Promise, an organization with a mission to educate and empower youth and adults to prevent violence in schools, homes, and communities. Through their proven, evidence-informed Know the Signs programs and sensible, bipartisan school and gun safety legislation, they teach youth and adults to recognize, intervene, and get help for individuals who may be socially isolated and/or at risk of hurting themselves or others.  Sandy Hook Promise envisions a future where all children are free from school shootings and other acts of violence. 
Sandy Hook Promise is seeking a bold, creative individual with a track record of developing relationships and partnerships that resulted in significantly increased revenue and has deep experience at seven-figure+ gift levels. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this full-time, fully remote position is for immediate hire.

ABOUT SANDY HOOK PROMISE:
Sandy Hook Promise is a moderate, bipartisan organization that was founded and led by several family members whose loved ones were killed in the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14, 2012. Sandy Hook Promise is dedicated to preventing gun violence and creating a culture of inclusivity, safety, respect, and kindness in schools and communities across the United States.

Sandy Hook Promise offers a range of evidence-informed programs and initiatives designed to empower youth, educators, and community members to recognize the signs preceding violence and to take steps to prevent it. Their programs include educational resources for schools, youth leadership programs, and community-based campaigns to raise awareness of the impacts of gun violence.

Through its work, Sandy Hook Promise aims to build a movement of individuals and organizations committed to promoting gun safety, mental health awareness, and social and emotional learning. The organization has received widespread support from educators, parents, and lawmakers, as well as celebrities and public figures, and continues to play a vital role in the national conversation around gun violence prevention.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
Sandy Hook Promise seeks an innovative, mission-driven Senior Vice President of Development (SVP) to expand its fundraising efforts. Reporting to the COO and working closely with the CEOs, the SVP will lead and manage a development team, cultivate high-level donors, and strengthen constituent relationships by increasing awareness and building constituent support. The SVP will also identify, cultivate, and actively manage a donor portfolio through prospecting, qualifying, and cultivating high-level donors and collaborate with leadership to achieve fundraising goals. This role requires a strategic, hands-on leader with a track record of success in major gift development and experience leading fundraising for large national organizations, who possesses the ability to effectively translate and implement such strategies into actionable plans and tangible results. The SVP will be a player-coach responsible for motivating and educating a cohesive team while building and maintaining strong relationships with donors and focusing their energies toward radically increasing and securing six and seven-figure gifts from individuals, foundations, and corporations.

RESPONSIBILITY OVERVIEW:

  • Developing a best-in-class national development organization by building on the current strong foundation, creating strategies that increase fundraising of six and seven-figure gifts, and leveraging the relationships between programs, marketing, communications, and operations.
  • Positioning SHP for long-term sustainable success by identifying new sources of revenue in both 501C3 and 501C4 entities, cultivating new donors, and increasing SHP's current major gifts and institutional support well beyond the $5 million threshold.
  • Serving as the lead visionary and strategist for the development team, fostering a collaborative culture amongst staff, and leading an effective development program while keeping the organization's mission at the forefront.
  • Creatively and strategically expanding the donor base, with a heightened focus on major gifts and event creation and management, while working closely with the marketing team to leverage and upgrade SHP's grassroots base.
  • Collaborating and leveraging relationships of SHP's leadership, including the Board of Directors, CEOs, current donors, advisory boards, and senior leadership team, to effectively support the achievement of fundraising goals.
  • Enhancing the team's effectiveness and productivity by providing coaching and mentorship, motivating team members with energy, humor, and passion, and ensuring clear expectations.
  • Enhancing systems, processes, and structures, including partnering on developing the organization's REDI (Race, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) initiative across programs and policies.
  • Working with the senior leadership team to define organizational strategy and long-term goals with a growth mindset, creative ideas, and clear vision for how the development team will support and be integrated into the plan
  • Ensuring donors and key stakeholders acknowledge a sense of stewardship, gratitude, and purpose consistent with SHP's culture and mission.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 15+ years of progressive experience in national nonprofit development.
  • A proven track record of securing 7-figure gifts and the ability to set and meet ambitious fundraising goals in support of the SHP mission.
  • A successful track record in national nonprofit development, demonstrating a results-driven approach to scaling and achieving fundraising goals.
  • A proven and broad understanding of various fundraising channels, including major gifts, corporate giving, foundations, planned giving, special events, matching campaigns, and capital campaigns.
  • A balanced approach to leadership, with the ability to operate strategically and tactically. Candidate should have a servant leadership mentality and be open and receptive to thought partnership, new ideas, and feedback
  • Strong analytical and data-driven skills with a proven ability to drive development decisions and achieve strategic objectives using metrics.
  • A demonstrated enthusiasm and motivation in developing a forward-thinking vision for SHP fundraising.
  • Skilled in comprehending, synthesizing, and articulating complex information into a compelling case for support that motivates prospective donors to contribute.
  • Possesses exceptional communication skills and the ability to collaborate with highly talented team members, donors, and other stakeholders to achieve fundraising efforts.
  • Has a passion for leading a team of experienced development professionals in order to build synergy and a unified vision.
  • Holds a track record for being resourceful, adaptable, and achieving results through persistence and a “hustle” mentality.
  • Stands as an “agent for change” with an understanding of gun violence prevention and related social justice movements.
  • Ability to inspire current and prospective supporters, build on SHP's mission and vision for the future, and think entrepreneurially to inject new ideas.
  • Exemplifies the values and mission of SHP, inspiring and motivating others.


COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
This amazing, full-time opportunity offers the ability to work on initiatives that have a direct and positive impact on reducing gun violence and enhancing community safety. This fully remote position offers a competitive base salary of $170,000–$180,000 and comprehensive benefits, including medical, dental, vision, 401(k) with employer matching, unlimited paid time off, sick time, paid holidays, Life and AD&D, Short-Term Disability, Long-Term Disability, an employee assistance program, and a monthly cellphone, internet, and home office setup/supply reimbursement.
