Scion Executive Search has been retained to conduct a search for the incoming Executive Director on behalf of the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC), an inclusive and holistic educational organization designed to support and promote undergraduate honors education. Reporting to the Board of Directors, this full-time permanent hybrid position is for immediate hire and will operate from the organization’s headquarters as needed for organization efficiency. The NCHC office is located on the beautiful University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus in Lincoln, Nebraska.
 

ABOUT THE NATIONAL COLLEGIATE HONORS COUNCIL (NCHC)
The National Collegiate Honors Council has a long-standing organizational history as the authority in the field of honors education. The oldest and largest honors organization in the world, it supports and enhances the community of educational institutions, professionals, and students who participate in collegiate honors education across the world. The organization provides its members with resources, training opportunities, and collaborative events to build and sustain honors programs and their curricula. Founded in 1966, NCHC has grown to nearly 800 member institutions and impacts over 330,000 honors students annually. Through these institutions, the members have access to scholarships and exclusive events to develop and expand their educational goals. The staff and 21-person Board of Directors are made up of esteemed professors and students at universities across the US, all with their pulse on the heart of higher education.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
This position requires a dynamic, mission-driven leader who is passionate about leading and directing agency operations, fostering growth, as well as developing and implementing the organization’s programmatic initiatives. The Executive Director will work directly with the Board of Directors to develop strategic priorities and advance programs and alliances with other organizational and governmental agencies involved in higher education. They will oversee the organization’s budget and allocation of resources to enhance the value of membership and help lead NCHC into the future. 

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and partners with board members to enhance, support, and transform vision and strategy into focused actions and initiatives that advance the organization’s member value. They will effectively communicate the organization’s long-term goals to all relevant stakeholders and collaborate with the board on how to reach them. The Executive Director will make certain that NCHC expands its membership base by offering compelling programming and valued opportunities. This person will collaborate with the Board, President-Elect, staff, and Conference Planning Committee and appropriate coordinators to organize and promote the annual conference. They will also work with staff and committee chairs to develop other programming throughout the year.


POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Manage the Board of Directors productively and collaboratively creating efficient practices and proactive communication.
  • Lead, manage, and guide the organization to attain continued growth, success, and optimal mission impact for NCHC.
  • Expand NCHC’s position as an international frontrunner in honors education at the college and university level.
  • Foster efforts to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in all aspects of our mission.
  • Define measurable goals and regularly compile data to track where the organization can improve support of its membership and track DEI efforts.
  • Strategically communicate to the membership community through the website, social media, member listserv, and other outlets to promote available services and events.
  • Provide visionary leadership by way of prospecting and developing new programs, strengthening the organizational brand for NCHC member staff, faculty, and students.
  • Identify opportunities for increased partnership and collaboration with stakeholders and new member colleges and universities serving honors students.
  • Manage working relationships between staff and volunteer committees.
  • Create and maintain effective working relationships with the members of the Board of Directors. Assure an adequate flow of information and be able to advise in the development of policies and procedures.
  • Actively engage in complex fiscal management through hands-on budgetary development and oversight; routinely report performance and financial activities to the Board.
  • Actively recruit, manage, and retain a team of staff members committed to NCHC’s mission and advancing its objectives and programs.
  • Foster a collaborative working environment, provide professional development, and champion respect, accountability, and inclusivity among staff.  
  • Actively prospect potential new additions to the Board that align with NCHC’s work or would be beneficial to the organization.
  • Consistently anticipate the needs of many while advocating for the productivity and efficiency of the organization.
  • Implement, maintain, and/or develop strategic plans for the organization to exceed expectations of organizational work and impact.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A minimum of an advanced or terminal degree is required.
  • Personal experience and or a connection to nonprofits, education, or membership organizations.
  • Proven track record of producing strategic, operational, and fiscal results in a similar complex membership-driven organization.
  • History with successful management of a dynamic, multi-program organization; a strong understanding of what it takes to maximize program effectiveness, maintain deliverable quality, and optimize resources.
  • Experience working with a Board of Directors including collaboration and consensus with the Chair/President.
  • Strong proven abilities in fiscal management; preparing and securing board approval for a complex budget.
  • Experience and demonstrated competence in building and developing a team of staff. Additional experience in managing remote or hybrid staff is especially welcome.
  • Charismatic leadership with credibility for effective representation to relevant policymakers, the board, members, allied organizations, and the media.
  • Knowledge of how to foster an environment of accountability, ambitious goals, healthy work relationships and partnerships, and inclusivity among organizational staff in order to maintain a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Demonstrates outstanding listening skills and active engagement to solicit input from a range of viewpoints.
  • Especially helpful, but not required, would be a passion for honors education and understanding the challenges facing colleges and universities.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
This full-time, hybrid position offers the opportunity to make a significant impact on higher education. In addition to a competitive base salary of $130,000 to $150,000.
