Reporting to the Senior Executive and Director for the Center for Leadership, Education, and Development, this full-time opportunity is for immediate hire and is a hybrid position in Washington, D.C.


POSITION OVERVIEW:
NLC seeks a highly strategic and mission-driven Director to drive transformative change on educational issues impacting children, youth, and families and advance primary, secondary, and post-secondary student success. The Director will oversee the development and delivery of technical assistance programs and policy initiative issues impacting after-school programs, college completion, education, and workforce development. In this role, the Director will utilize innovative approaches to facilitate partner engagement at all levels to advance important programmatic goals. This critical work will require strong leadership and management experience and a proven track record of collaborating with partners and constituents to achieve goals and objectives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategic Leadership
  • Participate in developing short- and long-term strategic plans in collaboration with senior leadership.
  • Serve as NLC's thought leader on education issues impacting cities and communities.
  • Develop and manage the department and ensure deliverables on grant-funded activity are met.
  • Oversee the development of publications, tools, and resources to support the administration of programs with member cities. Respond to general inquiries and requests for assistance from NLC member cities, state municipal leagues, and other interested organizations.

Grant Management
  • Develop grant proposals to sustain and expand services for assigned programs in collaboration with the Director.
  • Solicit funding for proposals, identify potential funders for proposed programs, and cultivate relationships with key representatives.
  • Finalize, and submit proposals to funders for approval.
  • Manage the fulfillment of and compliance with grant agreements.
  • Manage relationships with Foundations that provide program funding.
  • Prepare, provide, and present executive summaries and detailed reports to NLC leadership and grant providers.

Technical Assistance
  • Lead delivery of technical assistance for various program areas, including the execution and management of new business development, projects, and staff.
  • Serves as technical/content expert for various programs and facilitates communities of practice around cross-cutting key topics and methods.
  • Interact with local government officials, NLC staff, media, and outside researchers to respond to inquiries/requests and to identify and monitor emerging issues reflected in and supported by applied research activities.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree required in education, public administration, urban affairs, public policy, or a related field.
  • Broad knowledge of and expertise in national policy and philanthropy of education and expanded learning, including higher education, K-12, workforce development, and similar programming.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in various formats to diverse audiences, national interest groups, and the media.
  • Passion for the NLC mission and commitment to investing in communities through education and expanded learning resources and initiatives.
  • Progressive responsibility for leading a diverse staff team providing mentorship, sponsorship, coaching, and guidance to all team members.
  • Ability to execute fundraising plans and strategies that maintain and generate funding streams.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in grant proposal development, submission, and reporting.
  • Experience in developing and monitoring budgets and generating financial reports and records.
  • Strong commitment to organizational DEI.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with peers and other key stakeholders.
  • Occasional travel will be required, including overnight stays.


COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
In addition to caring for the communities it serves, NLC cares for its team members. With a competitive base salary of $185,000 (DOE), NLC provides employees with a generous benefits package with access to robust Health, Vision & Dental Insurance, life insurance, and a retirement plan. Additional benefits include annual cost of living increases and tuition assistance options! Vacation is accrued following the employee start date, reaching 20 days per year, with 13 days of sick leave, 1 personal leave day, and 12 paid holidays yearly!
