The Scion Executive Search team, along with Executive Search Principal Sydney Burnham and Senior Associate Kristi Marcouillier, are pleased to share that Dirk Butler has been identified as NAF’s incoming Chief Program Officer! Dirk brings over 20 years of experience working across nonprofit, private, and academic sectors to develop successful programs for the community, youth, and families.

An expert in community and government partnerships as well as career and technical education, general education, and youth programs, Dirk possesses a research-focused, outcomes-driven, and evidence-based mindset with an unwavering commitment to creating positive change for young people looking to follow their academic dreams. From foundations to government to large-scale nonprofits, Dirk has kept diversity, equity, and inclusion at the center of all he does. He has dedicated his life to advancing social justice and equity, leading efforts that create long-term sustainable impacts for underserved populations and communities.

Dirk’s leadership history is extensive and includes leading national programs of over $100 million. He is well-versed in training and stewarding nonprofit boards and is excellent at coalition building. Moreover, Dirk invests in his teams and supports their professional development, so that they can bestsupport the development of clients served.

Growing up in Brooklyn, Dirk realized very early on how one’s life course can be determined by systemic barriers. “We all lose when young people’s development isn’t valued,” he opined. “Education became my pipeline to a productive life. I know first-hand how young people of color can blossom when they are invested in, supported, and nurtured. Helping to lead an organization such as NAF will be the culmination of a career built on working for justice, equity, and opportunity for marginalized young people. Cultivating academic achievement is the highest form of social justice.”
