Scion Nonprofit Staffing has been engaged to conduct an immediate search to find a VP of Programs for our client, Asian Americans Advancing Justice, Southern California (AJSOCAL), one of the nation’s largest legal and civil rights organizations, located in Los Angeles, CA! AJSOCAL serves thousands every year, with a focus on the most vulnerable members of the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
As a member of the Executive Leadership Team, the Vice President of Programs is responsible for the execution of AJSOCAL’s programmatic functions such as Direct Services, Impact Litigation and Policy. The right individual will be an impassioned legal steward who wants to make a difference in an impact-focused organization! The candidate in this position will also align strongly with AJSOCAL’s values of compassion, community responsiveness, courage, and collaboration.

The VP of Programs reports to the Chief Executive Officer and has direct oversight of the Managing Director and other programmatic staff.  AJSOCAL is based in downtown Los Angeles, with satellite offices in Orange County and Sacramento.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • Guarantee that services and programs are suitable and culturally responsive to the specifics of the AAPI community served.
  • Fortify and elevate the organization’s civil rights voice and impact.
  • Oversee Impact Litigation department to bring challenges in state and federal court to create systems change.
  • Supervise Policy to create systems change using local, state, and federal advocacy, including legislation.
  • Manages Direct Services programs, including legal services for the AAPI community.
  • Improves alignment between Impact Litigation, Policy, and Direct Services to promote effective collaboration.
  • Enable effective program execution.
  • Ensure grant deliverables and fiscal responsibilities are met.
  • Remain compliant with legal and regulatory requirements with Administration, Finance, and Development departments.
  • Improve the quality of services and productivity levels.
  • Retain high-performance team members through coaching and supervision.
  • Utilizing professional development through continuous learning to foster an environment of excellence in service delivery.
  • Promote a culture of collaboration between staff and units to cultivate partnerships with Community-Based Organizations
  • Sustain and expand the impact of AJSOCAL initiatives by building long-term, cross-sector relationships.
  • Staying current with trends in legal aid, changes in areas of interest to the AAPI community, program advancements, and best practices.
  • Provide strategic, inspirational support to various stakeholders that are key community partners.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Juris Doctorate and an active member in good standing with the California State Bar.
  • 6 years in progressive supervisorial positions, preferably in a legal aid.
  • Background in the public interest or addressing social justice issues preferred.
  • Strong preference for knowledge and experience working with immigrant communities (experience working with AAPI communities preferred).
  • Experience with strategy, strategic planning, and executing multiple portfolios and projects concurrently.
  • Detail-oriented, highly organized, and ability to prioritize tasks, take initiative, and handle all levels of administration, including routine duties.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to write and speak persuasively to diverse audiences; to include media, general public, advocates, lawyers, and funders.
  • Ability to operate in a professional office environment. Capability to use standard office equipment including but not limited to printers/fax machines, computers, and phones.
*Night and weekend shifts may be required, as well as occasional travel.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:  
Our client offers a competitive base salary of $140,400 to $171,900; robust medical, dental, and vision benefits; basic life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance; flexible spending account; long term disability benefits; employee assistance programs; flexible, hybrid work schedules; 403(b) retirement option w/match; and referral bonuses!
