Scion Nonprofit Staffing has been engaged to conduct a search for a Finance & Operations Associate for a nonprofit dedicated to uplifting leaders in the public education space. This is a full-time, contract to hire opportunity based out of Chicago, IL right next to Chicago Union Station that offers an on-site work schedule with one day remote.

In this role, the Finance & Operations Associate will support the People & Operations director with coordinating audits, preparing payroll, and managing the annual budget process.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop and maintain a positive working relationship with finance partners.
  • Facilitate smooth communication and collaboration during audits.
  • Ensure timely response to requests and updates from the finance partner, especially during critical deadlines (Q4 and early Q1).
  • Assist with quarterly schedule preparation and review.
  • Oversee and review daily banking activities and ensure proper management of benefit partners (details needed).
  • Monitor and close accounts payable monthly, collaborating with the team on closing development/fundraising accounts and tracking monthly grant-making activities.
  • Review Mastercard statements (prepared by the Associate) to ensure accuracy and readiness for COO/CEO approval.
  • Conduct initial monthly review of the General Ledger (G/L) for correct coding and readiness for COO/CEO approval.
  • Perform quarterly finance checks against budget and payroll/benefit checks against billing.
  • Recommend budget changes and flag potential errors requiring action by the finance partner and COO/CEO.
  • Prepare twice-monthly payroll journals for review by the Director of Operations.
  • Collaborate with the finance partner to ensure journal entries accurately reflect payroll costs.
  • Coordinate and manage the annual budgeting process for the organization.
  • Contribute effectively to the annual calendar planning process.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Demonstrated experience in the nonprofit finance industry
  • Knowledge of payroll preparation, budget creation, and accounting report generation
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 as well as Dropbox, Google Workspace, Monday.com, and Bill.com,
  • Advanced written and verbal communications skills with the ability to produce documents like stewardship communications, reports, reach outs, etc.
  • Desire to work on a mission driven team, collaborating effectively across departments and vendors
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or other related field is preferred

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
This contract opportunity allows you to work with an enthusiastic and thriving nonprofit organization! The hourly rate for this role ranges between $29 - $32 per hour and has the potential to start immediately. You will also be eligible to receive medical, dental, vision and voluntary life insurance, an employee assistance plan (EAP), and commuter and transit benefits for those who are working on average 30 or more hours per week.
