Position Overview:
As a member of the Executive team, the Vice President of development provides leadership and guidance to advance New 42’s mission. The VP works closely with the President, the Board Chairman and is the primary staff member in communication with the entire Board, after the President.
Working with the President, the Artistic Director, and six other Vice Presidents, the VP of Development participates in the generation and analysis of new ideas, advancements, and challenges that affect New 42 as a whole. The VP has a key role in organizational decision-making, strategic planning, and the creation and support of a culture that encourages a deep sense of belonging for employees, artists, and audiences while seeking to provide access for all.
The VP of Development provides leadership for all of New 42’s development activities and serves as the overall designer of a comprehensive fundraising program for The New Victory Theater and the organization’s other programs to increase annual contributed operating income, meet capital project needs, build cash reserve accounts and establish an endowment. This includes working with the Development staff of 8 to create, improve, and execute development plans, budgets, and fundraising systems and procedures, including data management, prospect research, and donor engagement and event strategies.
Responsibilities, Skills, Abilities and Qualities:
- Is responsible for facilitating New 42’s development and growth by creating new donor relationships and deepening all philanthropic relationships for the organization.
- With the President, sets the annual contributed income goal and identifies initiatives to achieve or exceed that goal; continually looks for ways to increase fundraising to meet increasing program and capital needs; leads the design and execution of fundraising campaigns and activities.
- Collaborates with the Board of Directors and its committees to further the institution’s goals; acts as staff liaison with the Board’s Development and Nominating Committees.
- Increases the visibility and understanding of the organization's work and mission; represents New 42 in public settings.
- With the President and Board cultivates and solicits prospective major individuals, sponsors, and institutional supporters.
- Hires Development’s Directors and Senior Managers and manages this senior staff to carry out all development activities, including identification and cultivation of individual gifts, annual giving, special events, special appeals and campaigns, corporate sponsorships and foundation, corporate and government grant writing.
- Steers logistics and creative planning of the annual gala, overseeing the work of the Event Producer and Director of Individual Giving and spearheading the fundraising for the event.
- Leads the Development team to raise funds across all public and private sectors, generating support from foundations, corporations, government sources, and individual contributors, while maintaining their own portfolio of high-level donors.
- Prepares and presents Development reports at Committee and Board meetings.
- Mentors, motivates and provides clear direction and priorities to a development staff of 8, including presenting and encouraging professional development opportunities.
- Sees each production in The New Victory season.
- Keen interpersonal judgment, maturity, and collaborative skills to work effectively with New 42’s President, Board, VP’s, and staff at all levels, across all departments.
- Knowledge of the cultural arena and performing arts; understanding of young audiences and sensitivity to the needs and habits of kids and families.
- Bright and diplomatic attitude while working with the highest level of personal integrity.
- Ability to assess the organization’s past successes, challenges and future opportunities.
- Bold and innovative approach to fundraising.
- A sense of humor.
Requirements:
- Bachelors degree
- 15+ years of experience in the development field in positions with increasing leadership responsibility.
- Depth of knowledge in all key areas of development, including major gifts, annual giving, corporate, foundation, and government relations, sponsorships, grants and special events.
- Connections to New York philanthropic sources, including high-level donors, foundation leadership, and government agencies.
- Proven ability to cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts.
- Confident and strategic leader with strong management skills and a demonstrated ability to lead a professional and dedicated development team with the highest level of efficiency and effectiveness.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and communication skills.
- Ability to work nights and weekends.
Compensation and Benefits:
In addition to a competitive annual base salary of $175,000 to $225,000 (DOE), this rewarding role also offers an exceptional benefits package which includes medical, dental, vision, paid time off (PTO) for vacation (15 days/year), sick days(7/year), paid holidays (11/year and 1 floating holiday), FSA, EAP, 403b, life insurance, short- and long-term disability and ultimately a job with a highly regarded, mission-driven organization and team who will inspire you daily!
