Scion Nonprofit Staffing, an award-winning full-service staffing firm, has been engaged to conduct a search for a Director of People and Culture on behalf of our highly regarded and well-respected client, an established nonprofit organization dedicated to natural resource preservation. This full-time, remote opportunity is available immediately and offers the potential to transition to a hybrid working environment post-pandemic.

 

Position Summary:

Our client seeks an experienced an inventive human resources professional who is people-oriented, places work culture as a top priority, and develops strategies to advance practices that support both. Working in partnership with internal stakeholders to collaborate across a small but dynamic organization, the Director of People and Culture brings expertise and creativity to existing employment-related programs. The Director of People and Culture also prioritizes efforts to cultivate an inclusive, and diverse culture that advocates for an equitable work environment at all times.  This position offers tremendous opportunities to impact organizational success, provides high visibility, and reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Directly manage all facets of the organization’s recruiting process.
  • Develop and oversee the new hire orientation process to ensure a positive onboarding experience.
  • Collaborate with Leadership and staff to cultivate a strong and cohesive culture that is rooted in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) commitments.
  • Lead or facilitate group discussions  around any surfacing issues, organizational changes, and best practices for well-being at work.
  • Help plan and organize staff activities and gatherings (online and in-person) to foster a sense of community and connection.
  • Review and modify as appropriate the organization’s annual performance review process.
  • Assist with developing effective feedback, development plans, and corrective actions as appropriate, reinforcing consistent and equitable practices.
  • Provide guidance and coaching to supervisors to address employee engagement, retention, behavior, and performance concerns.
  • Create systems to track and ensure all staff have clear professional development goals and help to identify training resources when needed.
  • Provide coaching and guidance to supervisors concerning medical and disability leave, ADA accommodations, workers comp, and respond to grievances or complaints.  Work with outside legal counsel as appropriate.
  • Provide guidance and coaching to resolve problems and address issues in a timely manner. Promote facilitate, and mediate effective conflict resolution.
  • Develop, update, and communicate employment policies to establish positive employer-employee relationships in compliance with California State and Federal laws.
  • Partner with CEO on decisions regarding the organization’s compensation and benefits program; leading compensation and benefits surveys when needed.
  • Develop internal salary ranges for all positions to ensure consistency and equity in compensation.
  • Oversee all aspects of employee health/welfare benefit plans and other related benefit programs, including group plan renewal process as well as individual enrollments, terminations, and special claims situations. Additionally, ensure information related to 401(k) is communicated annually and as new hires become eligible.
  • In partnership with CEO and other senior staff, evaluate needs and strategies for restructuring within programs or departments. Partnership efforts include creation of new positions, succession planning, addressing training needs, changes in roles or reporting relationships, plans for expansion into other geographic areas, and applying a DEI lens to all efforts.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or relevant skills and experience. 
  • 5+ years’ of progressive nonprofit human resources leadership experience.
  • Strong, unwavering commitment to DEI, paired with prior related training; experience developing and implementing consistent, equitable policies and practices.
  • Experience coaching others in best practices on managing performance toward clear goals.
  • Experience working with all levels of staff, with the ability to coach others on effective interpersonal communications, and conflict prevention and resolution.
  • Possesses a good understanding of Federal and California employment law with experience interpreting and guiding others in its application, without being officious, to ensure compliance and reduce exposure.
  • Strong, clear verbal and written communication skills; good at synthesizing and explaining policies and practices.
  • Experience in working with Microsoft Suite/Office 365.
  • Great sense of humor!
  • Strong follow-through and results-oriented business approach.
  • SPHR or PHR certification is a plus!

Compensation & Benefits:
In addition to a competitive base salary (DOE), this opportunity offers a robust benefits package with fully paid medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees (with a contribution toward dependent coverage), generous 401(k) with 5% match, Paid Time Off (PTO), Paid Sick Leave (PSL), 9 annual paid holidays with an additional 4 paid days the last week of December.
